SNCC Photographer Tamio Wakayama Exhibit & Panel Discussion

Photo by Tamio Wakayama, Indianola, MS 1964

SNCC staff photographer Tamio Wakayama exhibit features his SNCC photos and the work he did after SNCC, focused on his Japanese Canadian community of Vancouver and the annual Powell Street Arts Festival.

Judy Richardson shares, “Tamio (now deceased) shared that when he was on the SNCC 50th conference panel in Raleigh, he and his family were sent to a Canadian internment camp during WWII. In 1963 he drove his VW South to join the Movement, right after the 1963 Birmingham church bombing. Forman corralled him into driving the SNCC contingent at the funeral back to the SNCC office in Atlanta… and the rest is history.”
