Amanda Bowens Perdew
1945-2006
Amanda Bowens, who grew up in Americus, GA, was a student at Sumter County High School when she became involved with SNCC in Americus. As a SNCC activist, Bowens was arrested and spent two months in jail. Amanda was also a song leader for the Americus movement and a member of the Americus Trio which sang protest songs to inspire and support civil rights workers. When Amanda was nineteen she married fellow SNCC worker John Perdew. (They fled to Denver to get married since interracial marriages were against Georgia law.)
