Culture Of The Movement
SNCC helped expand the environment of freedom that had existed since the first Africans were offloaded and sold into slavery. The 1960’s Movement helped tap into this energy. Movement culture emphasized the concept of freedom and was expressed and expanded on in song, poetry, dance movement, visual portrayals, literature, and written and spoken word.

The pioneering activist and trailblazing photographer whose work helped propagate the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the 1960s, was born on January 1, 1938, to immigrants from Barbados who lived in Brooklyn, New York.
